bleedperl fails to build on FreeBSD-4.8 Stable

I rsync'ed bleed perl and tried to build one with

./Configure -Dprefix=$HOME/bleedperl -Doptimize='-g -O6' -DDEBUGGING 
-Uinstallusrbinperl -Dusemorebits -Dusethreads -Dusedevel -desO

on FreeBSD

It seems ./perl fails to build.  I am now trying to build with more 
normal Configure options....
