This version works now under PERL_CORE=1 on a disconnected machine.
However, with PERL_CORE=0 and a connected machine I got some errors
with pinging the 172.29.249.249 host through http. I guess that's
because my provider uses a transparent proxy for all http requests and
redirects to a custom error page if a ip does not exist.
