I think $STANDARD_HELP_VERSION is a good compromise between compatibility, safety and functionality. OUTPUT_HELP_VERSION is a nice idea, but I think it is unnecessary and can be eliminated. Output goes to either STDERR (for 'unaware' scripts) or STDOUT (for 'aware' scripts with $STANDARD_HELP_VERSION set).
