I'm losing you. The initial idea was to transparently provide new
functionality without the need to change scripts. This turned out to
be risky since it would either break existing scripts, or become
non-standard behaving functionality (writing the messages to
STDERR instead of STDOUT, and continue processing). To overcome these
problems, you suggest to make small modifications to the scripts. No
problem with that, but it defeats the original idea. 

Providing --version and --help handling in a uniform and automated way
by Getopt::* is a good idea that will benefit many programmers.
However, the programmer will have to explicitly indicate, one way or
another, that she wants to use this functionality.
