This is a bug report for perl from ben@callahans.org,
generated with the help of perlbug 1.34 running under perl v5.8.0.

The substitute operator, according to the documentation (perlop), is not
supposed to interpolate variables in either the PATTERN or the REPLACEMENT
strings. However:

ben@Fenrir:~$ perl -wpe"s'$foo'bar'"
$foo
bar$foo

ben@Fenrir:~$ perl -wpe"s'bar'$foo'"
bar

foobar
foo

This problem has existed for quite a while (or I've misunderstood the docs
for that long :) - I believe I remember seeing it in the days of Perl
5.00503, and it definitely exists in 5.6.1.

Best regards,
Ben Okopnik
