[perl #21379] can't located object method new in package uri

When trying to run "make test" for libwww-perl on my linux box I get the 
following error: Can't locate object method new in package "URI" at 
/usr/local/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.0/HTTP/Response.pm.  One of the 
prerequisites for libwww-perl is the URI module which I have installed.  If 
anyone knows a quick fix for this one please let me know.  I've searched all 
over to no avail.  Thanks.
