not that i know of... nothing special was happening with the box at
the time anyway.

i've gone and started a new smoke now, so i can't try and reproduce
any of the problems :(

i don't know if it's related, but i got access to a machine with VC6
on it yesterday and tried compiling the same perl as on the linux box.
it compiled away, eventually failing like:

        link -dll -def:perldll.def -base:0x28000000 -out:..\perl57.dll @C:\DOCUM
  E~1\daniel\LOCALS~1\Temp\nma01344.
  perldll.def : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol Perl_Idebug_pad_ptr
  ..\perl57.lib : fatal error LNK1120: 1 unresolved externals
LINK : fatal error LNK1141: failure during build of exports file
NMAKE : fatal error U1077: 'link' : return code '0x475'
  Stop.

i don't know anything at all about the whole windows/VC thing, i just
followed the instructions in README.win32. 5.6.1 compiled, tested and
installed okay.

hth, and i'll try to remember not to clobber the logs if it's still
bad tomorrow...

daniel
