There might be a hidden space at the end of that.  Try changing

        print STDERR "EXPECTED:\n$expected\n";
        print STDERR "GOT:\n$results\n";

to

        print STDERR "EXPECTED:\n'$expected'\n";
        print STDERR "GOT:\n'$results'\n";

so we can see.

Smells like IO.  Did you have perlio on or off?  Try it the other way
and see what happens.
