I've been getting errors loke this:

Fetching with Net::FTP:
Couldn't login on at /usr/local/lib/perl5/5.7.2/ line 2132.
Fetching with LWP:
Argument "" isn't numeric in subroutine entry at /usr/local/lib/perl5/5.7.2/IO/Socket/ line 194.
LWP failed with code[500] message[connect: timeout]
Fetching with Net::FTP:
Couldn't cwd pub/perl/CPAN/authors/id/P/PI/PINYAN at /usr/local/lib/perl5/5.7.2/ line 2136.
Fetching with LWP:
Argument "" isn't numeric in subroutine entry at /usr/local/lib/perl5/5.7.2/IO/Socket/ line 194.

from time to time

I saw this mentioned once in p5p, but it was in the context
of threads. (I am not using threads, and I wonder why
I should be seeing this error)

line 194 is inside sub IO::Socket::INET::configure
       if ($sock->connect(pack_sockaddr_in($rport, $raddr))) {
#            ${*$sock}{'io_socket_timeout'} = $timeout;
            return $sock;

I would have thought that the remote host name would have
been converted to an ip address, as that seems to be what
  Socket::pack_sockaddr_in expects.
