For those of us who really liked the initial clamp()/unclamp() syntax
you proposed, I'd love to see some exported routines from the module
with names like that.  This would make it feel like Carp.pm in some
respects--a nice add-on that requires little extra typing after I use
the module.

I'd argue that they should be exported by default, but could be
convinced otherwise.  And there's certain to be discussion about which
routines would be in the default list and which would have to be
requested.  But I'm a big fan of the original "[un]lock the keys in
this hash" utility of it.
