I've now disabled the 5.6.* smokes.

My plans are to scrutinize README.hpux and hints/hpux.sh together with Jeff,
and to extend the testsuite by doing *every* configuration with and without
-DDEBUGGING to locate those heisenbugs sooner.

Any comments? Other test schemes?
