My understanding is that the only special characters in POD are capital
letters followed by <.  Nothing else is special inside a text paragraph;
if the output format has other special characters, the translator has to
take care of escaping them.  (Pod::Man does this with \ and whatnot that
have a special meaning in *roff.)
