file time test operators

Curiosity strikes:

    Why do the file time test operators ( -M, -A, -C ) operate based
on "Age of files in days when the script started?" 

    Do people use that functionality?  I'd think it would be more
useful to make those flags operate like -s, and be shortcuts for the stat
call.  (But I'm sure there is a backward compatibility issue here.)
