I can't answer for "anyone", but I puzzled over the
PERL_FLEXIBLE_EXCEPTIONS code when implementing Perl-C++ and C++-Perl
exception handling for Pickle, and I ended up getting by fine without
it.

In my opinion, it serves no useful purpose.
