I think you mean s/\.o/.c/ here (and that's what your patch says, too.)

But isn't *.i a semi-standard suffix for preprocessed C source? I don't 
think I've seen *.pp before.

gcc seems to have this suffix built in, too; its info file says that 
FILE.i is "C source code which should not be preprocessed" and has a 
pendant FILE.ii for C++ code.
