This is a bug report for perl from pcg@goof.com,
generated with the help of perlbug 1.32 running under perl v5.7.0.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
[Please enter your report here]

This Program:

   $a = "/tmp/papp...";
   $b = '/tmp/papp.top';

   use Encode;
   Encode::on_utf8($a);

   $a |= $b;

   print $a;

Prints

"/tmp/papp.~op"

because the |= operator does strange things (it seems that dots trigger
this behaviour ;). Testes with the perl evrsion below and DEVEL7523.
