FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Yet Another Society Community Funded Perl Development Grant
Awarded to Damian Conway

Sun Oct 29 16:07:57 EST 2000

In an unprecedented two week contribution period, users, programmers,
and companies involved with the Perl community raised enough
funding to grant Damian Conway the first-ever Perl Development Grant
through the Yet Another Society (http://yetanother.org).

"The community just came together immediately and turned this from
a possibility into a reality, in an unbelievably short time. Damian
has been one of the most active members of the Perl community, and
now he has a chance to spend a year working on something he really
cares about -- Perl," said Kevin Lenzo, the president of Yet
Another Society. "Individuals and companies that care about Perl
have carried out a new kind of patronage here."

Blackstar (http://www.blackstar.co.uk), an on-line video sales
company, offered US$27,500 in matching contributions at the start of
the fund raising, amounting to half of what was needed to buy out
Dr. Conway's obligations at Monash University in Australia. Other
major contributions came from VA Linux (http://www.valinux.com),
Manning Publications (http://www.manning.com), Stonehenge Consulting
(http://www.stonehenge.com), O'Reilly Publications
(http://www.oreilly.com), and from several individuals. Funding over
the base amount is to be used for travel and expenses.

See http://yetanother.org/damian/ for more information. The list
of contributors will be posted there, as will Dr. Conway's diary
and calendar for the next year.

Yet Another Society (YAS) is an organization dedicated to the
advancement of collaborative efforts in Computer and Information
Science, and is the parent organization of the Yet Another Perl
Conference (http://www.yapc.org). YAS has applied for non-profit
status in the United States. Dr. Damian Conway is a Lecturer
at Monash University, and has contributed greatly to Perl. He
is also the author of the book "Object Oriented Perl."
