[ID 20000901.047] Comments in Extended Regular Expressions

This is a bug report for perl from d-oppenheim2@nwu.edu,
generated with the help of perlbug 1.26 running under perl 5.00503.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
[Please enter your report here]
In the regex below, there is an apparent bug which yields a compile error, as it apparently thinks the '/' in my comment is a slash indicating the close of the regex. Apparently, /'s cannot be used on any line of a comment if they are the delimiting character of the pattern match. I assume this is not intended behavior, as I haven't found this documented anywhere.

  if ( / ^(\d\d)\/(\d\d)\s+  #mo/day
             (\w{3})\s+(@?\w{3})\s{2}  #team (@)opp
             (\w|\s)\s{1,2}           #outcome
             .* /x )

The errors from compilation are shown below:

Bareword found where operator expected at bb2/seas_log_rtns.pm line 20, near "/ ^(\d\d)\/(\d\d)\s+ #mo/day"
        (Missing operator before day?)
Backslash found where operator expected at bb2/seas_log_rtns.pm line 21, near ")\"
        (Missing operator before \?)

[Please do not change anything below this line]
