problem with libnet and perl 5.6.0

Since 5.6.0 was released I have had reports from people that libnet
stopped working. Just a simple contructor like

  $pop = Net::POP3->new($home, Timeout => 20);

started to return undef where with 5.005_03 it worked perfectly well.

I have not been able to reproduce this problem, but finally I have
been able to get someone to not ignore my request for the output
of perl -V, which is included below.

I have still been unable to regenerate the problem, so I am hoping that
someone on this list will be able to and track the problem down.
