The gentleman who is working for the OED informed me that the
bibliographer is most likely to reject on-line references. Usenix is going
to go through their archive of bound ;logins to see if they can find the
first mention of Perl. Byte mag and Dobbs are 2 other that have potential
for early mentions of Perl.
Also, it would probably be good to make the distinction between Perl and
perl, but was the Camel the first mention of this? Anyone has something
printed to dispute that?
He is also working on the word 'copyleft' if anyone has some information
regarding the origins and first uses of it.
Perl will make it into the OED and possibly a specialty dictionary.
And...the OED uses Perl :)
