This is a bug report for perl from gbarr@chipper.localdomain,
generated with the help of perlbug 1.28 running under perl v5.6.0.

In perl5.6.0 a child forked to write to the console can get back into the
main code if there is an error opening /dev/console. 

Heres a patch
