Although I have never liked the word "octet", it has one shining benefit.
It isn't likely to be overtaken by events (as in "byte" getting larger)
or redefined by some committee (as in "ASCII").  So, if you want a word
that implies "8-bit data" (and will continue to do so :-), octet may be
a good pick.
