That's possible.
However, it happens to be the word we use in French for "byte". ;-)

PS: Tom, in French, we don't pronounce the final "t", and the "s" for
plural is silent here anyway. But even in French, "octet" is longer than
(the way we pronounce with our French mouth) "byte". However, "octets"
is shorter than "bytes", in French speak, and easier on the mouth too.
And it's {OCO} versus {COC}, [Ok'tE] versus [bha?s].
