The reason I sent the original mail is that I knew that the last perl that I knew worked worth a damn of MachTen was with 5.6.1, and I wanted to minimize the possibility of anybody coming along and getting frustrated on discovering that more current perls would not even build. I just unmothballed MachTen and confirmed that 5.6.2 makes a fairly good fist of building -- just one (new) test failed -- so stopping perl >= 5.8.x from building seems like the right thing to do.
