Could you send the output from running the ./myconfig script?
It should say what version your glibc is, which is probably more important
than the kernel version.

I've not had trouble building perl on SuSE 8.2, but I assume that SuSE
changed a lot between 7.x and 8.x

Can you build perl OK if you don't Configure for threads?
