More progress. perl -e is still segfaulting, but that's just
happening within the call to mktemp that the -e causes so I think
that's an easy thing to fix.

If I build against the system malloc (-Uusemymalloc) everything
suddenly gets a lot better. It might be fun for someone to see where
the bitrot is in malloc.c, but mostly it just hurts my brain.

make test runs, with a few small fixes, mostly to do with expecting
'.' to be in $PATH, and relying on there being an /etc/termcap, both
of which are less likely these days.

7 test scripts still fail, but they seem like real bugs rather than
just dodgyness in the test harness.
