Perhaps something like Module::Finder and File::Fu could create suitable 
extraction layers for that and eliminate the need for e.g. "readdir(),
catfile(), -d, -e, open(), ..." (code assuming a filesystem.)  I 
wouldn't be against patches to allow a plugin/subclass setup to allow 
these to support a virtual @INC.
