I don't see the humor.  It seems like a completely normal 
situation to me, one that I've seen on many mailing lists and 
newsgroups.  Note also that the question wasn't just on a 
German-language group -- it was also crossposted to 
comp.lang.perl and comp.infosystems.www.servers.unix, so the 
original poster would presumably have found an English reply 
useful.

And I've been similar situations before.  I had a fairly 
extensive conversation like that a few years ago when a guy 
wandered into my office and asked me in Spanish about where he 
should be applying for a job as a janitor.  I replied in 
English, he continued in Spanish, and we communicated 
reasonably well.  Lots of people understand foreign languages 
better than they speak or write them.
