It's a horse designed by committee.  It's not graceful, it's not
pretty, looks like its cobbled together from bits of other animals and
if you mistreat it it'll spit in your eye.

But camels are surprisingly fast, can carry a heavy load and will
happily keep going long after your horse has died.

IIRC There is a certain person who picks the animal for book covers at
O'Reilly and her word is final.  I don't know which came first,
though.  Programming Perl or Perl's association with the camel.
