I'm sure that most of those subscribed to this list have heard of the
PCRE library, Perl Compatible Regular Expressions.

But that library, although based on perl, was split off, and is
developed seperately... updates to perl's regex engine don't appear in
PCRE unless the maintainers of that copy more stuff from perl into it.

Would it be possible to make it so that perl's regex engine is made less
dependent on perl, so that the same code could be shared by both perl
and for external libraries?

Eg, put all the regex stuff into some sort of perl-re.dll which both
perl and pcre use, instead of having duplicated code in each.

Other things that might be useful to have factored out into seperate
distributions, upon which perl depends would be PERLIO and Encode.
