from my uninformed perspective, it seems that people think that writing
a C++ writer will buy them portability as opposed to writing C++ directly.

if this is the crux of the argument, aren't you really looking for a better
build system? (i.e., an alternative to autoconf and make)

my alterior motive here of course is that this project could speed the
adoption of make alternatives, which would seem a nice by-product (although
i am not sure if this is collectively desired in any way).
