I'd like to suggest that the term "source filters" refers to
transformations that lead eventually to the creation of standard
Perl which is then compiled in the normal way.  Digital signature
verification, for example, or macro processing.

Alternative parsing -- alternative languages, in fact -- is a useful
idea, but IMO a technically distinct one.
