Java has been the topic of a long discussion on advocacy@perl.org, where
it was noted that Java really does have a solid marketing machine behind
it, often making statements that apply equally to Perl.
However, even Java does not have a single voice. Sun is behind a lot of
it, but there are an awful lot of other people talking about Java too.
The trick which Sun/Java has managed is to get the people who use Java
(usually the people who develop or distribute 3rd party libraries or
applications) to do their marketing for them.
You know what I think the biggest Java marketing trick is? The phrase
"100% pure Java[tm]". As a freshmeat editor, I've been seeing this
phrase a few times a day for months. Why aren't we saying "100% Pure
Perl[tm]" on all our Perl apps? But that's a tangent which probably
doesn't need exploring on the bootstrap list :)
