I'm afraid I disagree with this. Ian's first reply said: ] This is how I would do it. ] To every one else, please feel free to critique my perl programming skills. ] I'm a Mainframe Assembler programmer and still learning perl. Any critique ] will just help to improve my skills. I can't imagine anyone staking their business on a script following such a warning, or even expecting such a script to be bug free and exhibiting all the currently accepted best practices (whatever they may be). I think it should be obvious to all the Ian was using this as an opportunity to practice his newly acquired skills on a small real world problem with the hope that someone more experienced might be able to critique his code, which you graciously did. I also think that this is something to be applauded and emulated. In this way Ian managed to salvage this no-hoper of a thread into something that, with your assistance, should be beneficial not only to him but also to other beginners following along at home and perhaps even to Jyotishmaan Ray who, as unlikely as it may appear and even though he seems to be under some misapprehensions as to the purpose of this list, may yet gain something positive from it. Now, had Ian blustered into a sensible thread proposing sub-optimal or incorrect measures as authoritative solutions I would completely agree with you but in this case I don't see that happening. On the contrary, I think that both Ian and you are to be commended for your contributions to this thread. And I also agree with the other sentiments which have been expressed therein. With the exception of the message to which I am replying, of course ;-) -- Paul Johnson - paul@pjcj.net http://www.pjcj.netThread Previous | Thread Next
