I will bet that the original posting contained a single dot.  Many MTAs 
prepend a line starting with a dot with another dot, and many MUAs don't 
reverse this operation.  Your posting had three dots :-)

Here, check this out.  The lines below as I type them have one, two, and 
three dots respectively on them.  How many do you see?
