Good point. Perhaps, on failure, a regex could set $@ to indicate what the
problem was:
while (gui_getchar($nextchar)) {
$input.$nextchar =~ m/$pattern/;
if ($@ =~ /fail/) { beep }
else { $input .= $nextchar }
}
