Isn't it the good old tradition of a courtesy copy? It gets to you
faster than via the mailing list and in case the mailing list doesn't
work, the discussion can continue. It allows you to set your filters
accordingly, like: store this mail in two mailboxes, store it only
here or only there, give this mail a higher priority, etc. I prefer to
get a courtesy copy because I can react quicker, especially when I'm
tied up with work and cannot read the mailing list as frequently as
I'd like.

Trimming CC lists from time to time is good if you realise that a
thread grows out of bounds (as happens really often), but trimming CC
list always would probably be an overreaction.
