As noted on blogs.perl.org[1], is seems Git on Windows bundles a perl
based on the msys system. This may very well be the most popular Perl
distribution on Windows. However, this is currently a fairly old
version (5.8.8, it seems it was originally based on 5.6.1), and they
patched[2] the build system quite a bit to make it work. It would be
nice if we could actually support msys out of the box if anyone is
interested into doing the actual work of porting the patches into this
decade.
