Here's a patch, as a sequence of git commits, for the stuff discussed
last month in the thread starting at
<20120813114101.GA31598@bytemark.barnyard.co.uk>.

It's mostly noodling around in the doco, with minimal changes to
pp_pack.c to make it croak if someone actually tries to *use* the syntax
that we're reserving, and tests that it really does croak.
