Two preliminary questions:

1. The errors during configuration notwithstanding, did you have any 
success with running 'make'?  (I.e., did you eventually manage to build 
'perl' from source?)

2. Can you provide a link to the documentation for the C-compiler you 
used here, 'c89'?
