Generally, Configure should try to be helpful, but in this case, I don't
see any easy way to have Configure bail out early. (If I knew more about
SOCKS, perhaps I could, but I don't.)
This seems to me to be a fairly rare error and falls more in the the
category of "Don't do that". I'll close the ticket as "WontFix" (or
whatever our closest equivalent is.)
