perlxstut.pod section "EXAMPLE 6" shows

    if ((!SvROK(paths))

Should it run get-magic before looking at that flag, so a tied scalar
input and similar can work?

I've seen a couple of similar bits in actual xs code so it'd be good to
show all the details in that example for the benefit of anyone
cut-and-paste coding :).
