I think I'd write it as: running "make distclean" should delete all build and configuration files, and return your build directory to the same state as before you started, ie just as if you had freshly unpacked the distribution tar file. However, we suspect that there are bugs in "make distclean" - ie it's not deleting all the files that it should. Files it fails to delete may cause problems, so if you try it, re-run Configure and still have problems, you may want to delete your build directory and untar again.
