All of these questions could be applied to Perl itself, and yet somehow we 
manage to make decisions and have only the one (stable) version.

Same thing they do now; release a new version of the SDK.  At which time, 
any issues of backward incompatibility will be roundly debated on the 
appropriate mailing list, and if the answers are inadequate, the pumpqueen 
will be overthrown in a bloody coup by programmers flinging dead Java 
programs over the walls with a trebuchet.
