If you want to stay with something free, I'd suggest TextWrangler from Bare Bones: http://www.barebones.com/products/textwrangler/index.shtml It has good syntax coloring, and integrates well with the command-line perl - you can set a keyboard shortcut to run scripts & check their syntax, and you can write filters and other scripts in perl.
