Description:
Slashdot (www.slashdot.org), “News for Nerds”, the social hub to engage in
news and discussions that matter to the tech audience, is looking for an
experienced Principal Software Engineer who will be responsible for design,
development and sustaining engineering of key components of Slashdot and
associated technology, and tracking record of designing and developing
scalable web applications. Slashdot is written in Perl and developed using
the Agile methodology. 
Responsibilities:
•	Collaborate with the Director of Engineering and agile software
engineering team to design, plan, and refine product strategy
•	Develop an understanding of Slashdot’s community and come up with
solutions to enhance the users’ experience
•	Drive community engagement through new product development
•	Deliver new mobile technology platform (phone, tablet)
•	Drive integration with business analytics and large data analysis

Required skills:
•	B.S. degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering
•	5+ years experience with PERL
•	Outstanding team player with great communication skills
•	Hands-on Experience in web application technologies (HTML,
Javascript, CSS, Struts)
•	Experience in XML technologies (SOAP, XML, XSLT)
•	Practical experience with XP (or any other agile methodology) is
definitely a plus
•	Hands-on experience with at least one of the following databases:
PostgreSQL, MySQL
•	Practical experience with Linux as a development platform (CentOS)
•	At least 2 years experience with LAMP (MP==MySQL and Perl)
•	Must feel comfortable working in a Linux CLI
•	Understanding of Relational databases and SQL.	Able to construct
multi-table join statements
•	Familiarity with revision control system (preferably GIT).
•	Familiarity with AJAX and JQuery

Desired skills:
•	Experience with caching (especially memcached and/or varnish)
•	Experience working with high traffic, high performance, high
availability systems
•	Experience with search engines (sphinx would be best)
•	Self motivated, and able to work independently.
•	Experience with/Passion for OSS
•	Experience with internet based application frameworks ->
SOAP/REST/XML-RPC
