Description:
The University of California, Merced is the newest and tenth campus of the
University of California system and the first American research university
built in the 21st century. With approximately 2,600 students, UC Merced has
planned for additional student growth until we reach an enrollment of
approximately 25,000 students. With undergraduate, graduate, and PhD
programs, plans for a future medical school program, partnerships and
community involvement, the UC Merced campus is continually evolving,
requiring talented, knowledgeable and dynamic educators, researchers,
management and staff.
The purpose of the Programmer and Systems Server Administrator is to
develop and enhance reporting databases and applications (academic
personnel, financial, etc.). This position will be responsible for
analyzing the information requirements of analysts developing options and
making recommendations for solutions (database design, applications, tools,
reports), implementing and testing new applications and systems. This
position will also design, develop, test, document, and implement web-based
applications for the School of Natural Sciences. Develop Internet and
Intranet applications with advanced functionality, including server-side
components, server- and client-side scripting, state information
management, and database integration. Establish and adhere to detailed time
lines governing the completion and testing of new applications. Maintain
existing applications including functional and performance enhancements,
bug fixes, and security patches. Contribute to the establishment of and
follow efficient application development standards based on current
technology and industry best practices. Work closely with the Schools
administrative staff and faculty. Compile, analyze, and interpret complex
business processes and work flows. Evaluate current and emerging
web-related technology solutions for current and planned projects. The
successful candidate will consult with and train clients on a variety of
information technology and systems management issues.
Required skills:
Bachelors degree (or equivalent education and experience) in information
systems, computer science, or related field plus minimum of three to five
years of programming experience (multiple languages). Experience working in
a higher education environment preferred.
Business/systems analyst experience required, two years preferred.
Demonstrated experience working with users to identify information systems
needs and potential solutions. Experience designing, developing,
documenting, and maintaining databases required. Must be able to apply good
practices in database design and development and lead development from
initiation to deployment.
Must have basic understanding of HTML and the ability to create HTML
documents from scratch using an editor like vim. Experience with SQL in the
Mysql database system which include selects utilizing joins, creation and
altering of tables. PERL knowledge is esencial or experience in another
scripting or high level language and a willingness to learn PERL.
Understanding of Javascript would be desirable or a willingness to learn
how to use this in web pages. The principal environment is Linux and an
understanding of working in a shell environment is important including
Linux file system and command line utilities. Understanding of Windows 2003
file server would also be desirable.
Ability to work both independently and within a team and to handle
sensitive data professionally is required. Knowledge of Federal and State
laws regarding privacy of data is desirable.
Must be able to work on multiple projects concurrently and work within
deadlines and adjust priorities of tasks when necessitated by users and
supervisor. Must have excellent listening and communication skills, be well
organized, creative and show initiative.
